News Release - October 23, 2009 SWIFT CURRENT CREEK WATERSHED PROTECTION PLAN COMPLETEDPremier Brad Wall was on hand today as the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority and the Swift Current Creek Watershed Stewards officially released Saskatchewan's eighth watershed protection plan. "Making sure that all Saskatchewan residents have a dependable supply of clean, safe water is a priority for our government," Wall said during an event held in Swift Current today to mark the plan's release. "Whether it's here in my hometown or anywhere else in the province, water is vital to our continued growth and the security of our people." The Swift Current Creek Watershed Protection Plan includes 62 key actions aimed at protecting water quality and quantity throughout the watershed. It was developed over a period of nearly two years by a committee of local leaders representing municipal governments and various non-government organizations, and in partnership with the Swift Current Creek Watershed Stewards, a non-profit group dedicated to enhancing water quality and stream health in the watershed. "Our planning process has indirectly represented each and every citizen in our watershed. It is our hope that through combined efforts, the significant potential for protecting our source waters in the Swift Current Creek watershed will be realized," Chair of the Swift Current Creek Watershed Advisory Committee and the Swift Current Creek Watershed Stewards Harold Martens said. Wall also presented the Stewards with $42,670 to oversee the implementation of the plan and to provide local direction for the long-term protection of the area's water resources. The grant from the Watershed Authority will help cover salary, office and travel expenses associated with that work for this year.
