Premier Lorne Calvert has proclaimed Saturday, January 27 as Family Literacy
Day in Saskatchewan. He celebrated family literacy at Ecole Lakeview School
this morning where he encouraged the students to be readers forever.
"Family literacy focuses on the power of family members as role models,"
Calvert said. "It enables all family members to develop their own literacy
skills, and at the same time, help children learn. Family Literacy Day
celebrates the important work accomplished by families and the family literacy
community."
Through the Saskatchewan Literacy Commission, the Government of Saskatchewan
has committed $2 million this year to the delivery of literacy programs and
services in communities across the province. This includes $1.2 million in
support of family literacy programs.
It is estimated that over 4,700 Saskatchewan people will access family
literacy programs funded by the Saskatchewan Literacy Commission and delivered
by literacy partners.
Premier Calvert recognized Saskatoon Public Schools for their Literacy for
Life initiative and commended the school division's students who have read
over 2.5 million books outside of school since the program began in 2004.
"Our school division is a leader in literacy," Saskatoon Public School Board
chair Ray Morrison said. "Our Literacy for Life initiative means our students
are developing skills and attitudes that will positively affect them well
beyond their days in school."
"We are fortunate to have so many people, so many families, teachers and
administrators in this province committed to literacy," Calvert said.
"Together, we can maintain and strengthen literacy skills of all Saskatchewan
people, in school, in the community, at home and at work. Our support of
family literacy is about helping people build better futures for themselves
and their families."
