News Release - November 12, 2004 PRODUCER COUNCIL ENCOURAGES PARTICIPATION IN NEW ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMMING
The newly formed Saskatchewan Agri-Environmental Advisory Council has endorsed the Canada - Saskatchewan Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) program - a critical step in creating widespread acceptance of the program.
Composed of experienced and respected agricultural leaders from across the province, the council was formed to guide development of environmental programming under the Agricultural Policy Framework (APF), including the EFP program. "The council provides critical insight in determining the direction of agri-environmental programming that is tailor-made for Saskatchewan," said Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Minister Andy Mitchell. "I am confident that all of Saskatchewan will benefit from its advice." "Governments and producers are working together to further enhance Saskatchewan's long-standing tradition of environmental stewardship," Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food Minister Mark Wartman said. "The council members represent a diverse wealth of agricultural knowledge from across our province, and will ensure that producers have a strong voice in the creation of environmental programming in Saskatchewan." The council has been active in reviewing potential approaches for delivery of EFPs in Saskatchewan. Specifically, it has endorsed an independently delivered workshop approach to the EFP program. To that end, it has recommended that the Provincial Council of Agricultural Development and Diversification (ADD) Boards Inc. (PCAB) pursue the role of third-party delivery agent for the program. That process is currently underway. "As producers, council members are aware that environmental stewardship creates an important legacy for future generations and makes our products more attractive to environmentally conscious consumers around the world," council Chair Germain Dauk said. "We encourage all Saskatchewan producers to do an EFP." A target of early December has been set to deliver the first round of EFP workshops to Saskatchewan producers.
