PROVINCE HELPS HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD A HOME FOR A REGINA FAMILY

A Regina family will soon have a home of its own, thanks to a partnership with Habitat for Humanity, North Ridge Development Corporation and $50,000 in funding assistance from the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. Construction of the home was officially launched today at a sod-turning ceremony.

"Our government is so proud to support the many success stories being written by Habitat for Humanity across our province," Regina Dewdney MLA Gene Makowsky said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. "Projects like this one are another example of people stepping forward to work toward a common goal. We are very pleased to work with Habitat for Humanity and North Ridge Developments to help another Saskatchewan family experience improved health, educational and economic opportunities - something that will benefit them for years to come."

"We are very thankful to North Ridge Developments for their generous support with the donation of the lot for this project, which will provide another opportunity to build a home for a Regina family," Habitat for Humanity Regina Director of Fund Development Trish Bezborotko said on behalf of Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Dennis Coutts. "Working partnerships such as this one among the Government of Saskatchewan, Habitat for Humanity Regina and North Ridge Developments is a great example of what can happen when partners from all walks of life join forces for the common good and to help a hard-working, deserving family."

The Habitat for Humanity home, located at 123 Rothwell Crescent in Regina, will be a two storey, single family home. The three-bedroom house will be approximately 1,400 square feet, and construction is expected to be complete in the summer of 2013.

Since 2009, the province has invested $4.5 million to help Habitat for Humanity build a total of 90 homes for low- to moderate-income families across the province in the communities of Regina, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Yorkton, Saskatoon, Humboldt, Lloydminster and Nipawin.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership. Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity will contribute a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer labour, or sweat equity, toward the building of their home and other Habitat homes.
