SASKATCHEWAN EXPORTS UP, MANUFACTURING HOLDS STEADY

The latest figures from Stats Canada show that Saskatchewan's international exports increased by a remarkable 58 per cent, to $31.2 billion in 2008, compared to 2007 where $19.7 billion was realized. This was the highest percentage increase among the provinces.

Saskatchewan's total international exports increased by 18.1 per cent to $2 billion in December 2008, compared to December 2007 (seasonally-unadjusted), which recorded $1.7 billion. This was second-highest percentage increase among the provinces.

"Our exporters and manufacturers are performing very well even in these challenging economic times," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said on behalf of Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart. "These numbers show that Saskatchewan is producing quality and reliable goods that are in demand by local and international buyers."

Saskatchewan increased manufacturing shipments by 17.8 per cent to $12.3 billion in 2008 compared to 2007. This was the second-highest percentage increase among the provinces and the highest in the West. Newfoundland and Labrador was first at 26.2 per cent.

Comparing December 2008 to December 2007, manufacturing shipments in Saskatchewan were down slightly by 0.9 per cent (seasonally-unadjusted), to $819 million. Saskatchewan ranked second in terms of percentage change among the provinces.
