PROVINCE AND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HELP A REGINA FAMILY BECOME HOMEOWNERS

A key ceremony was held in Regina today to welcome a new Habitat for Humanity Regina partner family to their new home. The Government of Saskatchewan, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), provided $50,000 in funding assistance to help the project become a reality.

"It is an honour to help another Habitat for Humanity partner family to come home and become a part of the community," Regina Dewdney MLA Gene Makowsky said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. "Many caring people came together to make this project happen, and we are excited to be a part of it. Like Habitat for Humanity, its partners and volunteers, our government takes housing seriously and is proud to provide funding assistance for every home built by Habitat across Saskatchewan."

"How fortunate we are to have such a strong relationship with our provincial government in Saskatchewan," Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Dennis Coutts said. "Habitat for Humanity Regina hosted the national annual general meeting here in Regina this past weekend, and I can tell you that every affiliate in this country envies the strong relationship that we have here. More families are able to achieve their dream of home-ownership because of the commitment that the provincial government makes in providing funding for each and every home we build in the province."

Since 2009, the province has dedicated $4.5 million in funding for Habitat for Humanity affiliates and chapters in Moose Jaw, Regina, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Prince Albert, Lloydminster and Nipawin to help build a total of 90 homes across the province. As of March 2012, SHC has advanced $2.4 million of the $4.5 million available to Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the province to assist in the delivery of 48 homes for families.

Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 hours of sweat equity to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes, and participates in valuable training and preparation sessions. In return, their lives are transformed by the positive experience of working with the Habitat for Humanity community and by the many benefits that come along with homeownership.
