IMPROVEMENTS AT LA LOCHE AIRPORT

Construction is set to begin on the first phase of three improvement projects at the La Loche airport.

The first phase of the project involves construction of a 240-metre extension on the southeast end of the runway. During this phase the runway will be open to air traffic with 30 minutes prior notice required for incoming aircraft. Construction is estimated to begin July 15th.

The second phase of construction will add 10 centimetres of base gravel to the existing runway, taxiway and apron. A double seal coat will be applied to the entire surface. This phase will likely begin around July 31st, and will take approximately five days to complete. The airport will be closed in order for this work to be completed safely and efficiently.

Phase three of the improvements at La Loche Airport will begin around mid-August. This phase involves the installation of a new Precision Approach Path Indicator system, which helps guide aircraft to land, as well as improvements to the existing edge lighting systems. No traffic interruptions are expected during this phase.

"Air travel is of special importance to Saskatchewan's northern communities, given the widespread population and strong focus on tourism," Highways and Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "These improvements will help to better serve the needs of the airport users and surrounding communities."
