PRODUCERS ENCOURAGED TO APPLY FOR 2006 CAIS PAYMENTS

The Government of Saskatchewan is encouraging producers to submit their 2006 Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization (CAIS) harmonized forms as soon as possible to ensure timely payments.

Producers who have experienced a decline in their production margins in 2006, due to adverse production conditions including drought or flooding, may be eligible for a 2006 CAIS payment. To participate in the program for 2006, producers must have chosen a protection level prior to September 30, 2006.

“While a program such as CAIS may not be the answer for all situations, it can be an effective risk management tool for producers when used with other programs, such as Crop Insurance,” Agriculture and Food Minister Mark Wartman said.  “Without question, producers have and are facing many challenges, through no fault of their own.  Some producers have faced conditions of extreme moisture, while other producers have faced the opposite challenge, a lack of moisture.”

The Government of Saskatchewan has provided $500 million to farmers through the CAIS Program as part of the overall $1.25 bAillion in farm income support for the 2003 to 2005 program years.

Harmonized forms for the 2006 program year are available on Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s website at www.agr.gc.ca, or by calling the toll-free line at 1-866-367-8506.

The deadline to submit the forms is September 30, 2007.
