NEW LABORATORY BUILDING ANNOUNCED FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF REGINA

Learning Minister Judy Junor announced approval in principle today for a new addition to the University of Regina's Laboratory Building. The new building will require an estimated $32 million dollars to complete and is the next step in the University of Regina's development and expansion strategy.

The new addition will provide a marked increase in learning space and state-of-the-art laboratories.

"This new building will contribute to the growing research and teaching activities underway at the University and will be an important development in the Regina Knowledge Corridor," Junor said. "We are competing in a global economy, a knowledge economy, and our future is bound to the success of our universities. We must ensure that future generations inherit an institution shaped by the issues of today yet prepared for the challenges of tomorrow."

"This is an investment in education, our students, and our province. More importantly we are supporting the spirit of innovation and discovery. The new lab building will help ensure the university continues to attract and retain the finest faculty, and will create more opportunities for students to remain in Regina and pursue graduate studies," Junor added.

"The University of Regina serves its community through excellent teaching, as well as through innovative and dynamic research programs," University President David Barnard said. "Today's announcement means we can continue to build capacity to serve those goals. The Province's commitment to our future, and to investment in higher education, is the basis of a partnership which makes the Saskatchewan community stronger."

The University received funding from the province in June 2002 to begin the initial planning phase for this project. Initial planning is almost complete. Today's announcement allows the university to complete the planning stage and move directly into the design and construction phase.

The Department of Learning will continue to work with the University of Regina through the design and construction phase in developing the final size and scope of the building.
