QUENNELL WELCOMES IMPLEMENTATION OF NATIONAL SEX OFFENDER REGISTRY

Saskatchewan Justice Minister Frank Quennell welcomed today's announcement by Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada that the National Sex Offender Registry has been established.

"Saskatchewan has been asking for a National Sex Offender Registry since September 2000," Quennell said. "I am very pleased that the federal government has established the registry."

Quennell said the Crown will be seeking orders for those convicted of designated sex crimes immediately. The Crown will also begin immediately to serve notices on serving offenders to ensure they are placed on the registry.

"Saskatchewan is pleased to be working in partnership with the Government of Canada, the provinces and territories, and police agencies to implement this important investigative tool," Quennell said.
