SASKATCHEWAN BECOMES MEMBER OF ENERGY COUNCIL

Saskatchewan is now officially an international affiliate of The Energy Council, an American organization of state legislators focused on energy and environment-related policy concerns. The decision was made at an Energy Council meeting late last week in New Orleans.

"Saskatchewan is a North American energy-player and energy powerhouse, and has a long history as a secure and reliable energy exporter to the U.S. market," Industry and Resources Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "Our membership will help America's energy market by encouraging investment in energy infrastructure, production and technology improvements."

Saskatoon Massey Place MLA Eric Cline attended the meeting on behalf of Sonntag and the government and made two presentations to The Energy Council about Saskatchewan's importance as a North American energy leader. Cutknife-Turtleford MLA Michael Chisholm also attended the meeting.

Cline's presentations to the Energy Council included information about Saskatchewan's international leadership in carbon dioxide sequestration and enhanced oil recovery through the work of the Weyburn-Midale Carbon Dioxide Monitoring and Storage Project. Saskatchewan's world leadership in uranium production and the potential for Saskatchewan to host investments in uranium refining and enrichment facilities were also discussed.

The Energy Council is an organization of U.S. state legislators appointed from 10 U.S. states that produce oil and gas. It was founded in 1975 and has six international legislators as non-voting associate member jurisdictions, including Saskatchewan.
