ENFORCEMENT OVERDRIVE PROGRAM EXPANDS

The Enforcement Overdrive program is expanding to include the Moose Jaw Police Service and RCMP in the province.

The Enforcement Overdrive program allows police to hold additional roadside check stops for impaired driving, with SGI funding the increased staffing costs. The program already operates in Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert and Estevan.

"The fight against drinking and driving is one of SGI's top priorities," Minister responsible for SGI Glenn Hagel said. "The more check stops police have, the more impaired drivers are taken off the road. It also heightens the perception for motorists that they will be caught if they drink and drive. With the addition of the RCMP and Moose Jaw Police Service to the program, we'll be able to crack down on impaired driving all over the province."

"Drinking and driving is a serious concern for the RCMP both in rural Saskatchewan and in the urban areas we police," RCMP Inspector Don Ross said. "Thanks to SGI, Enforcement Overdrive will increase our capacity for check stops aimed at catching those who put lives at risk with this dangerous behaviour."

"The Moose Jaw Police Service is very pleased to be able to participate in the Enforcement Overdrive program," Moose Jaw Police Service Deputy Chief Dale Larsen said. "Our mission as a police service is to ensure the safety of our citizens and visitors; decreasing the number of impaired drivers on our city streets brings us one step closer to this objective. We commend SGI for providing the necessary resources to help us make our community safer through the Enforcement Overdrive Program."

In 2005, the Enforcement Overdrive program allowed participating police agencies to operate 185 check stops, resulting in 44,491 vehicles being checked and 356 drinking and driving charges laid.
