MUSIC INDUSTRY CONSULTATIONS LAUNCHED IN PRINCE ALBERT

The significant potential of Saskatchewan's music industry is being discussed in Prince Albert today.

Legislative Secretary to the Premier Joanne Crofford, who is responsible for the examination of the province's music industry, is consulting with a cross-section of music industry professionals to share ideas about how to grow this vital cultural sector.

"Our musicians, singers, songwriters and producers not only make significant contributions to our economy, they play a valuable role in shaping Saskatchewan's culture," Crofford said. "This review will help us to identify opportunities to support the music sector now and into the future, ensuring all Saskatchewan residents continue to benefit from the important contributions of this industry."

Successful events like the Prince Albert Winter Festival show how arts and music can draw people and communities together. The examination of the music industry is underway in partnership with the industry to capitalize on the activities of 2007 on a provincial scale.

Saskatchewan's music industry will be showcased to the rest of Canada in 2007. In addition to the continuation of annual music festivals and events, Saskatoon will host the Juno Awards. Regina will host the Canadian Country Music Awards and the Western Canadian Music Awards will be held in Moose Jaw. "Saskatchewan has produced world class talent, and is capable of hosting world class events. This is the right time to be working with the industry to effect change and capitalize on the many opportunities before us," Crofford said.

Crofford met with music professionals last week in Regina and Saskatoon as well as artists and industry representatives at the Western Canadian Music Awards in Winnipeg this past weekend.

Premier Lorne Calvert appointed Crofford to undertake an examination of Saskatchewan's music industry in May of 2006. The consultations will help to guide development of an interim report, which is expected in November. The final report is expected in June 2007.
