CLARENCE HOFFART CONSULTING LTD. FINED FOR DEATH OF WORKER

Clarence Hoffart Consulting Ltd. of Stoughton was fined $20,000, plus a $6,000 victim surcharge, for failing to comply with Occupational Health and Safety regulations regarding procedures for flammable substances.

The charged were laid after an explosion occurred in an oil treater container near Kisbey, which is about 80 kilometres northeast of Estevan, on Oct. 3rd, 2003. The incident caused the death of 19-year-old Denes Krhan and injuries to another worker.

"It is critical that all workers and especially those working near, or with, flammable substances receive the information, training and supervision necessary to do their jobs safely," Occupational Health and Safety executive director Allan Walker said. "These convictions send the message that there are repercussions for employers and workers who fail to comply with OH&S regulations."

The division will conduct over 4,500 workplace inspections and provide training to over 4,000 employer and worker representatives on their health and safety responsibilities this year.

Maximum penalties for an offence that causes the death or serious injury of a worker are $300,000 and two years in jail.
