ART MEETS WORK AT SCN

SCN invites the public to a reception at its Regina broadcast centre to view the innovative work of Saskatchewan visual artist Heather Cline.

Since October, Cline has transformed an SCN meeting room into a studio, integrating her art into the everyday work lives of SCN employees. Cline's five-month residency was part of a special Art at Work program, the first of its kind in Canada.

In 2004 the Saskatchewan Arts Board, in partnership with SaskCulture, Canadian Heritage and the City of Regina, created the Art at Work project to celebrate Regina's role as a culture capital of Canada. SCN partnered with Birdsong Communications and the Saskatchewan Motion Picture Industry Association to host Cline as their Artist in Residence.

Cline sees the residency as a rare opportunity to enrich people's working lives through art activity.

"By leading noon-hour art seminars and professional development sessions, and through my own daily practice, I strive to integrate art into the workplace," she said. "It's often this daily connection with people, as we work side by side and they observe my artistic process, that has the most impact."

The artwork created during Cline's residency uses innovative techniques and is thematically focused on 100 years of communication history in Saskatchewan. In recognition of International Women's Day, SCN will raffle a print of Cline's work and donate the proceeds to Sophia House in Regina.

"The depiction of 100 years of communication history in our province is a great focus for our centennial year," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said. "It is quite fitting that this is associated with SCN, the storyteller for our region."

SCN is Saskatchewan's own public broadcaster, delivering thought-provoking programs that highlight the diverse interests of the people of our region and share the culture of our community.

Art at Work is a project presented by the Saskatchewan Arts Board, in collaboration with the City of Regina, with the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Cultural Capitals of Canada program, the Department of Canadian Heritage, SaskCulture Inc. and the SaskLotteries Trust for Sport, Culture and Recreation.
