News Release - February 25, 2008 OPERATIONS TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED AT KEESEEKOOSE GROUP HOMESocial Services Minister Donna Harpauer today announced that she is temporarily suspending operations at Wi Ci Ti Zon (Keeseekoose) Group Home until it can fully address concerns around the ongoing care and treatment of children. Currently, there are no youth residing in the home. Harpauer said Social Services officials have been working with the Keeseekoose Board of Directors to address safety concerns at the home. However, a recent incident involving a fire at the home and allegations of a potentially violent confrontation between residents and staff has resulted in Harpauer making the decision to close the home until safety issues and other concerns have been fully addressed. "As Minister, my first priority is the safety of children in our care," Harpauer said. "The Keesekoose Board of Directors, management and staff have been working on a detailed plan to address our concerns. This temporary suspension gives Keeseekoose the time to refine and implement their plan." Wi Ci Ti Zon Group Home has been in operation since 2001 and provides services to female youth aged 12 to 17 who require staffed care. Social Services and Wi Ci Ti Zon will work together toward re-opening the group home. -30- For more information, contact: Debbie Clark Related Documents
