MEDIA ADVISORY

The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority has issued a high flow advisory for the Red Deer River basin near Hudson Bay and a water level advisory for Fishing Lake. Over the area from Wynyard eastward to Yorkton and northward to Hudson Bay, between 50 and 100 mm (millimetres) of rain was received over the last four days.  The hardest hit area was the area around Hudson Bay, which received close to 100 mm.

Streams in the Red Deer River basin including Duck, Pipestone, and Shand Creeks and the Copeau, Prairie and Red Deer Rivers have risen sharply and continue to rise. While peaks are not expected to be as high as those in April, there will be out of bank flows and flooding of agricultural land in many locations in the Red Deer River basin.

The rains also hit the Fishing Lake basin, which received between 50 to 75 mm over the last four days. Fishing Lake in May had dropped by about 40 mm from its peak of 530.5 m (metres) above sea level. It is expected to rise to at least the same elevation as the peak level this spring or higher depending on runoff into the lake.

Saskatchewan Watershed Authority will be monitoring the event closely and providing updates as the situation changes.
