AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT UNDERWAY IN SASKATOON

Construction of Juniper Manor, a three-storey residential building featuring 43 new affordable rental units, officially began today with a sod turning ceremony in Saskatoon. The project will provide affordable rental accommodation for low-income seniors, seniors with disabilities and new immigrants requiring strong cultural and emotional supports.

"My government is committed to providing affordable housing options that meet the needs of Saskatchewan people, particularly those who need a little extra help," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "The Juniper Manor project has truly brought together the municipal and provincial governments with this community and its residents to help make life better for Saskatoon seniors. This innovative facility combines a variety of affordable housing options into one location and has the added benefits of strong roots and a cultural connection to the community."

The project, which was undertaken by the Juniper Housing Corporation (JHC), will cost an estimated $4.7 million. JHC was approved for $3.2 million ($2.9 million from Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and $322,000 from the City of Saskatoon) through the provincial HomeFirst housing strategy, which addresses the current and future affordable housing needs of Saskatchewan people. The funding balance will be provided by JHC in the form of mortgage financing, community fundraising, land and in-kind contributions.

"Juniper Manor reflects the growing optimism and confidence in the Riversdale neighbourhood as a great place to live, work, shop and play," Saskatoon Mayor Donald Atchison said. "Projects such as this provide a stable place for people to live proudly within our city and keep Saskatoon's core neighbourhoods vibrant and attractive. We will continue to provide meaningful support to those organizations that are working hard to address housing issues in the community, and will continue to help with the development of projects, policies, and ideas that improve the availability and condition of housing."

Located at 400-block Avenue F South in Riversdale, an inner city neighbourhood, Juniper Manor will be wheelchair accessible and consist of 10 studio, 9 bachelor and 24 one-bedroom units. It will feature Asian architecture to reflect the traditions of the community and landscaped space in front for residents to socialize. Juniper Manor is scheduled for completion by summer 2008.

The JHC is a non-profit corporation registered in July 2005. Its partners and supports include the Saskatoon Chinese Benevolent Association, Saskatoon Chinese Cultural Association, Chinese Ladies' Association, along with AODBT Architectural Interior Design and North Ridge Development Corporation.
