News Release - September 12, 2003 WEST NILE VIRUS UPDATE
There are 26 new probable and confirmed cases of clinical illness due to West Nile Virus in Saskatchewan, bringing the total number of cases to 219. Heartland Regional Health Authority has also announced today Saskatchewan's first death as a result of West Nile Neurological Syndrome.
An elderly man in his eighties died on Tuesday, September 9th, with investigations indicating West Nile as the primary cause of death. "I join with Dr. Brenda Cholin, Medical Health Officer for the Heartland Region, in extending my sincere sympathies to the family," Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer for Saskatchewan Dr. Eric Young said. Although mosquito numbers are decreasing the risk of West Nile Virus disease will continue for the next couple of weeks depending on the weather. "It is important for Saskatchewan residents to continue to take preventative measures. In particular, use insect repellents, wear appropriate clothing, and avoid exposure to mosquitoes when possible," Young said.
