News Release - October 29, 2010 CPSP AGREEMENT WITH UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN PROMOTES COMMUNITY SAFETY RESEARCH AND TRAININGThe Ministry of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing (CPSP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) today to support the establishment of an interdisciplinary centre focused on research, education and training in the areas of forensic behavioural sciences and criminal justice. One of the key initiatives of the ministry-university partnership will be the development of a specialized training program for professionals in the field of corrections. This partnership also supports the Ministry of Advanced Education Employment and Immigration's commitment to post-secondary education. "We are excited to share our experience and learn from our new partners," Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert said. "This partnership will help establish Saskatchewan as a leader in community safety as it relates to criminal justice. It brings together the applied expertise of CPSP with the recognized research and evaluation expertise of the University of Saskatchewan." "Our government is committed to providing post-secondary students with the educational opportunities they need to excel in their chosen field of study and participate in the knowledge economy," Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris said. "This partnership represents a solid investment in our learners and in the future of Saskatchewan." The centre, which will bring together existing campus research and training expertise currently spread across the Colleges of Arts and Science, Medicine, Nursing and Law, as well as the Edwards School of Business, will fund research and promote the development of advanced interdisciplinary education and training opportunities focusing on various aspects of criminal justice. "We are pleased that this partnership will provide unique opportunities for both our students and our faculty members, in both hands-on training and research capacities," U of S President Peter MacKinnon said. "The university continues to work with its partners, such as the Province of Saskatchewan, to address societal challenges while educating the professionals and experts of tomorrow."
