PROGRAM TO BOOST ABORIGINAL PARTICIPATION IN THE ECONOMY

Saskatchewan has a new plan to involve more First Nations and Métis people in the economic mainstream.

The program makes grants available to Aboriginal business entrepreneurs who want to get involved in growth sectors of Saskatchewan's economy. The funding can also be used to expand existing operations. Ultimately, the program is designed to create more Aboriginal businesses and create jobs for Aboriginal people.

"This program will go a long way toward ensuring that First Nations and Métis people have the opportunity to fully participate in the mainstream economy of the province," First Nations and Métis Relations Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "This participation is necessary in order to maintain a strong economic and social future in Saskatchewan."

The Saskatchewan First Nations and Métis Economic Development Program is a four-year $5-million package beginning with $500,000 this fiscal year and $1,500,000 in the next three fiscal years. Applicants will be required to inject some of their own funding into the project.

"We anticipate the program will be in operation in the next few months,once some fine tuning of details is completed," Sonntag said. "Once that happens, we will ensure that information is provided on the requirements of the applicants and how to apply."

Designated First Nations and Métis economic development organizations will assess proposals and make recommendations to First Nations and Métis Relations. The department will make the final decisions and administer the dispersal of the funds. The program supports the province's Action Plan for the Economy which includes working with First Nations and Métis people to equip and engage them in broadening the economy.
