SASKATCHEWAN MARKS SEPTEMBER 11th ANNIVERSARY

The flags are flying at half-staff at the Legislative Building this weekend to honour the memory of the people who were killed or injured by the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11th, 2001 and their families.

"The tragic events of September 11th, 2001 made all of us aware of the importance of preparing for the unexpected, and it demonstrated the selfless contributions of the many emergency professionals and other people who protect us every day," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "For example, this year on September 26th, Saskatchewan volunteers have organized a Police and Peace Officers Memorial ceremony here for the first time, to honour all police and peace officers who have died in the line of duty and to support their families."

"In addition to implementing legislative changes to enhance emergency preparedness, all provincial government departments, agencies and Crown corporations regularly review and update their emergency management plans," Corrections and Public Safety Minister Peter Prebble said. "September 11th has reminded all of us of the importance of our protective services personnel and of the importance of emergency preparation."

Officials at Corrections and Public Safety also work closely with local governments and municipalities to help them develop emergency plans, as well as with other governments to help provide the communications, training and specialized equipment needed.
