THREE SASKATCHEWAN COMPANIES HAVE PLEADED GUILTY TO OHS CHARGES

Three companies operating in southern Saskatchewan recently pleaded guilty to a variety of charges under Saskatchewan's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation. Charges were stayed against a fourth company.

Ray-Donn Toews Building Materials Ltd., operating as Castle Building Products in Moose Jaw, has pleaded guilty to five charges in Moose Jaw Provincial Court, including not safeguarding a table saw, failing to ensure forklift operators wear a seatbelt or other restraint and failing to hold regular occupational health committee meetings. The company has been fined a total of $2,360. Four additional charges were stayed in court.

Cypress Homes Ltd. has pleaded guilty to three charges in Regina Provincial Court, including failing to use fall protection and protective headwear and failing to have a fall protection plan, and has been fined a total of $1,560. Two other charges against the company were stayed.

Thomsons Roofing and Renovation Ltd. pleaded guilty to four charges in Regina Provincial Court. The company has been fined $6,020 in total for failing to use protective headwear and footwear, failing to use fall protection, and failing to have a written fall protection plan. Two additional charges against the company and six charges against company Director Mark Thomson were stayed.

A single charge against Raven Roofing Ltd. was stayed in Moose Jaw Provincial Court, as the company provided supporting evidence of the company's defence of due diligence.

All of the charges arose from routine inspections by the Occupational Health and Safety Division. OHS conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced.
