ARCAND INQUEST

An inquest into the death of Jasmine Arcand will be held January 4th to 7th, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at the Saskatoon Queen's Bench Courthouse, 520 Spadina Crescent.

Ms. Arcand, aged 34 years, died February 17th, 2004, in police cells while in detention with the Saskatoon Police Service.

Section 20 of The Coroners Act, 1999, states that an inquest is to be held when the death of an inmate occurs in a jail, penitentiary, lock-up or correctional facility unless the death was due to natural causes and was not preventable.

In addition to establishing who died, when and where the individual died and the medical cause of death, the coroner's jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future. Inquests are open to the public.

Coroner Alma Wiebe of Saskatoon will preside at the inquest.
