VICTIM/WITNESS SERVICES LAUNCHED IN NORTHERN SASKATCHEWAN

A program that helps victims or witnesses of a violent crime who will testify in court is now available in northern communities.

Victim/Witness Services offers a range of services to help victims and witnesses, especially children, those with special needs or disabilities and victims of sexual assault cope with the violent incident and the criminal justice process.

"The services provided by the Victim/Witness program helps victims and witnesses feel less traumatized in the aftermath of a violent crime," Justice Minister Frank Quennell said. "It is important to support these individuals to ensure they understand their rights and feel safe, especially during their court appearance."

Victim/Witness Services are also available in the Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert regions. Communities in northern Saskatchewan have some of the highest rates of violent crime. The expansion of the Victim/Witness Services program to the north will help address the needs of those in northern communities.

Providing expanded services to victims and witnesses of crime in northern Saskatchewan is part of the government's response to the recommendations of the Commission on First Nations and Métis Peoples and Justice Reform.

The week of Oct. 31st to Nov. 6th marks Victim Services Week in Saskatchewan, which aims to raise understanding about the needs of victims of crime, and recognize the contribution of hundreds of Victims Services Program volunteers across the province. The theme of this year's Victims Services Week is "Continuing 100 Years of Heart". The theme supports Saskatchewan's Centennial year and celebrates the province's commitment to volunteerism.
