PREMIER ANNOUNCES CENTENNIAL WIND POWER FACILITY

Premier Lorne Calvert announced today that the 150-megawatt wind power project now under construction by SaskPower International is being named the Centennial Wind Power Facility in honour of the province's 100 year anniversary.

"There is no better example of our commitment to a green and prosperous economy than the Centennial Wind Power Facility," Calvert said. "Besides providing 150 MW of environmentally low-impact power, this project will have a multi-million dollar impact on the Saskatchewan economy."

"By naming it the Centennial Wind Power Facility in honour of our first one hundred years as a province, we are leaving a legacy for the next century and in particular for future generations," Calvert said.

"Our theme for the Centennial is 100 Years of Heart," Minister responsible for SaskPower Frank Quennell said. "Just think of the changes in technology that have occurred over that time in our province. The Centennial Wind Power Facility will reflect well upon the anniversary and the future."

The Government of Canada will provide approximately $54 million in funding over 10-years to the project through the Wind Power Production Incentive (WPPI) program. The project is located approximately 25 kilometres south east of Swift Current.

The Centennial Wind Power Project is currently the largest wind power development in Canada. Combined with Saskatchewan's existing wind power facilities there will be 172 MW of wind generation capacity in the province. At this point, wind power will represent approximately 5 per cent of Saskatchewan's total electrical generation capacity, the highest percentage in Canada.
