CELEBRATE THE 40TH EARTH DAY AT THE ROYAL SASKATCHEWAN MUSEUM

Celebrate the 40th annual Earth Day with the Royal Saskatchewan Museum and its partners by taking part in a variety of activities that will be held April 22 to April 25.

"Earth Day reflects our interest in sustainability and our commitment to inspire an appreciation and understanding of our world," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan said. "On this 40th anniversary of Earth Day, it is important to remind everyone of the need to preserve and learn from our natural environment and to foster sustainable communities."

The celebrations will begin the evening of Thursday, April 22, with a benefit concert called "Seeds for Sustainability" from 7-10 p.m. Proceeds from the concert will go to the North Central Community Gardens, a joint project of the North Central Community Association and Grow Regina. This project provides the residents of North Central Regina with increased food security and opportunities for community involvement.

The celebrations will feature the 4th Annual Environmental Film Festival titled, "See the Change Be the Change". It will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday, April 23 and at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 24. The Friday, April 23 evening program also includes an Environmental Activist Awards ceremony. The Festival of Family Fun will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 25. The Festival will feature music, activities and displays from local environmental businesses and organizations. All events will be held at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, at College Avenue and Albert Street in Regina.

Commemoration of Earth Day began in 1970 and is celebrated each April 22. The goal is to raise awareness about humanity's growing ecological footprint and to stimulate positive actions aimed at local, regional and global issues. These goals are demonstrated through the exhibits and programs offered at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum.

Earth Day is now the largest, most celebrated environmental event in the world, involving 500 million people in more than 180 countries. More than six million Canadians, including nearly every school child, take part in Earth Day.
