REMEMBERING JOHN MCCRAE EXHIBIT COMES TO GOVERNMENT HOUSE

Government House Museum and Heritage Property will feature an exhibit dedicated to the memory of John McCrae (1872-1918), from October 3rd - December 13th. John McCrae is best known as the author of the poem "In Flanders Fields". The exhibition offers new insights into his life prior to and during World War I.

"I am so pleased that our province has the opportunity to host this informative exhibit at historic Government House," Lieutenant Governor Gordon Barnhart said. "An understanding of our history is vital; it allows citizens to appreciate the sacrifices of our ancestors and to be informed decision-makers in shaping our future."

The exhibit was developed by Guelph Museums. It explores the many facets of John McCrae through the use of rarely seen photographs, artifacts, archival materials and quotations selected from personal correspondence. McCrae, a physician, soldier and noted professor of medicine at McGill University wrote his famous poem during the Second Battle of Ypres in late April 1915.

"This exhibit will increase the understanding of World War I for the many visitors, including school children, that tour historic Government House," Provincial Secretary Glenn Hagel said. "Students will be able to learn about the man who wrote the poem that still resonates with us today."

Artifacts from the Saskatchewan Military Museum that show Saskatchewan's contribution and involvement in World War I will also be on display.

Government House combines a museum, interpretive centre, hospitality facility, gift shop and the office of the Lieutenant Governor in one of Saskatchewan's premier historic sites. It is located at 4607 Dewdney Avenue, Regina. Hours of operation are Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Public tours are available every half hour. Tours for 10 or more people can be booked by calling (306) 787-5773.
