GOVERNMENT FUNDS FASD AWARENESS AND PREVENTION

The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute is receiving more than $100,000 in funding from the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) awareness and prevention.

"FASD is one of the leading known causes of developmental disabilities among Canadian children," Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority Dan D'Autremont said. "But FASD is completely preventable and these grants will help raise awareness about the dangers of consuming alcohol while pregnant."

D'Autremont noted that this partnership is a natural fit for the new government.

"Current First Nations and Métis Relations Minister June Draude has been at the forefront of the campaign to raise awareness on FASD," D'Autremont said. "Draude, along with former Saskatchewan Party MLA Arlene Julé, have committed many long hours bringing this issue to the public's and the former government's attention."

The grants will be used by the Institute to fund a provincial FASD prevention and awareness advertising campaign, as well as an evaluation of the campaign at its conclusion. The grants will also support the Saskatchewan Northern FASD Speakers' Bureau which focuses on increasing FASD education among front-line workers, caregivers and professionals in northern Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan Prevention Institute executive director Noreen Agrey said the prevention of FASD requires a multifaceted approach.

"The Speakers' Bureau and media campaign both play a vital role in providing prevention messages about FASD in Saskatchewan," Agrey said. "The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute is grateful for the funding provided by government."

The awareness campaign is expected to begin in early summer with television and radio commercials airing across the province. As well, SLGA stores will continue to feature the campaign's message and graphics on its store bags, till tapes and display campaign posters.
