U OF R RECEIVES INNOVATION AND SCIENCE FUNDS

Two research projects at the University of Regina will receive nearly $140,000 from the Government of Saskatchewan through the province's Innovation and Science Fund. The contribution matches that provided by the Canada Foundation for Innovation's New Opportunities Fund that provides funding for research infrastructure to new faculty members.

The funding will provide:

• $70,413 for equipment to assist Dr. Andrew Freywald research human leukemia and lymphoma cells; and

• $66,352 for a grid computing laboratory that will be used by researchers Terence Chan, Philip Fong and Mauricio Barbi to conduct research in particle physics, subatomic physics, data communications and media production.

"Since 2000 when the Innovation and Science Fund was introduced, the province has contributed nearly $62 million in grants to support research in our province," Advanced Education and Employment Minister Pat Atkinson said. "This funding helps Saskatchewan's research institutions, such as the University of Regina, expand in innovative directions and develop a solid research infrastructure. These activities support the province's priority to encourage job creation and diversity in our research sector."

"Funding projects like these represents solid investment in the future of both the university and the province," University of Regina President Robert Hawkins said. "New knowledge means new opportunities for the community that supports our university."

The Innovation and Science Fund supports research at Saskatchewan's universities, colleges, and research institutes on projects receiving approval and funding from the CFI, the Canada Research Chairs and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research.

The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is an independent corporation created by the Government of Canada to fund research infrastructure. The CFI's mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals and other non-profit research institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development that benefits Canadians.
