MINISTER OF SOCIAL SERVICES RECOGNIZES VOLUNTEER EFFORTS FOR RENOVATION PROJECT IN MAIDSTONE

Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer and Cut Knife/Turtleford MLA Michael Chisholm were in Maidstone today to view the renovations of Pine Island Suites and to thank the Golden Pond Seniors Residence Corporation, a group of community volunteers who brought the project together.

The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, contributed $50,000 toward the total renovation cost, which is estimated to be $180,000. A total of 13 units will have been renovated by the end of 2009, just under 18 months since the start of the project.

"This project truly has been a community effort," Chisholm said. "A need was identified, and thanks to thousands of hours of volunteer labour, Pine Island Suites will soon be a reality. Our government commends the Golden Pond Seniors Residence Corporation for their vision and hard work, and for helping to make life better for seniors in this community."

The renovations include the replacement of windows, floors, bathroom fixtures, appliances, rebuilding the kitchen and dining area, construction of a garage for storage and heating system upgrades.

The building was previously Pine Island Lodge, which was replaced in 2008 to create a safer, more comfortable environment for residents and staff.
