SENIORS’ HOUSING PROJECT TO BE BUILT IN PINEHOUSE

Construction of four new housing units for low to moderate-income seniors will begin in the northern Village of Pinehouse, thanks to a $300,000 investment from the provincial government.

"We are pleased to work closely with communities to provide affordable housing for older adults," Community Resources Minister Kevin Yates said. "This project will meet community needs and, most importantly, help senior residents stay close to family and friends. Our government is committed to making life better for Saskatchewan seniors by ensuring they have more access to adequate, suitable and affordable housing."

The project will be developed, owned and operated by the Village of Pinehouse. The development plans to incorporate a number of "green" features such as the use of renewable energy for heating and increased insulation. The Village of Pinehouse also plans to include training and skill development for youth. The projects that these youth will work on include the construction of the seniors' units as well as a workshop which will be used by the local high school to assist its trades training and work experience programming.

Saskatchewan Housing Corporation approved the $300,000 funding assistance through a forgivable equity loan, which will be provided to the Village of Pinehouse. The loan will be forgiven over a period of ten years. Under the terms of the agreement, the Village will be required to target low to moderate income households and maintain affordable rent levels, in order to secure loan forgiveness. This investment is part of HomeFirst, the province's affordable housing strategy.
