SCHOOL BUSINESS OFFICIALS ASSOCIATION STRENGTHENED

Education Minister and Deputy Premier Ken Krawetz introduced legislation in the house today that strengthens the Saskatchewan Association of School Business Officials (SASBO). A major partner in the education sector, the Association plays an important role in advising school divisions and the Ministry of financial and administrative issues.

"Our government is bringing forward new ideas to help our province reach its potential. Having a strong and positive relationship with partners in our education sector such as the Saskatchewan Association of School Business Officials is important to achieving this plan," Krawetz said. "The changes we are enacting with the introduction of this legislation will support their growth as an advisory organization."

The SASBO Act that was first enacted in the 1940s to regulate the chief financial officer position in school divisions is being repealed to allow the Association to change over to a not-for-profit corporation. With the repeal of The Act, the Association will be allowed to expand membership to include other financial and administrative positions in the education sector.

"The Act has served our Association well for many years. Given the significant changes in education over the last few years, SASBO and the role of its members has changed," SASBO president Lionel Diederichs said. "We look forward to the future and the new environment for SASBO where it can serve it members and education in an even greater way in the future."

The legislative change brings Saskatchewan in line with other jurisdictions across Canada.
