News Release - May 13, 2008 2008 SEASON OFFICIALLY OPENS FOR SASKATCHEWAN’S PROVINCIAL PARKSSaskatchewan provincial parks will officially open services for the summer season on Thursday, May 15. "Saskatchewan provincial parks continue to be one of the most visited and popular tourism destinations in Saskatchewan," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "Our government is keeping its promise by investing an additional $20 million in parks over four years, starting with $5 million in improvements this year." Some initiatives this year include elimination of the campfire fee, electrification of over 270 campsites and increased security and maintenance in the parks. Park fees remain the same as last year. To ensure safety of park visitors and staff, an alcohol ban will be in affect from Thursday, May 15 to Monday, May 19 inclusive in all provincial parks and Recreation Site campgrounds. Cottages and commercial businesses in provincial parks will not be affected by the ban. This ban was first introduced in 2006 and has been an effective tool in eliminating excessive partying, substance abuse, vandalism, disorderly conduct and general disrespect for others' rights and property. Parks staff are working hard to get all potable water systems started up for the season, prior to the May long weekend. Frost conditions sometimes prevent this in northern parks. If you are travelling to a northern park location, you are encouraged to call ahead to the park to see if the water systems are functional.
