WEEK CELEBRATES REGIONAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITIES

This is REDA Week in Saskatchewan, a time to celebrate the strength and achievements of organizations committed to grassroots community economic development.

There are 28 Regional Economic Development Authorities, or REDAs, in the province, developing and promoting the economic strengths of their regions. They represent collaboration among local governments, businesses, co-operatives and First Nations.

"REDAs have an excellent track record of promoting local economic opportunities and supporting the work of local entrepreneurs," Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline said. "They continue to reflect the power of partnerships that drive Saskatchewan's economic growth."

REDAs are currently supporting more than 150 business, tourism and infrastructure projects in Saskatchewan. A number of REDAs offer business retention and expansion programs and have undertaken various investment attraction initiatives.

The REDA program was established in 1993. Under the program, the government provides each REDA with cost-shared operating funding, to a maximum of $60,000 per year. REDAs can also access additional funding for youth employment.

Effective April 1st, 2005, the new Department of Rural Development will be responsible for government support to most of the province's REDAs.

Highlight of REDA Week is the "Business Beyond Borders" conference taking place today and tomorrow in Saskatoon. Sponsored by the Saskatchewan Economic Developers Association, the conference is examining trade opportunities with Latin America. During this conference, 14 of the province's REDAs will be presented with 10th year anniversary certificates.
