News Release - October 18, 2004 CROP REPORT FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 17TH
Farmers made some harvest progress in spite of the cool, wet weather, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization's weekly crop report.
Approximately 88 per cent of the 2004 crop has been harvested, behind the five-year average of 99 per cent. The west-central region is furthest along, at 97 per cent complete. The southeast is least advanced, with 79 per cent combined. Winter wheat, fall rye, pea, lentil, barley and mustard crops are all over 90 per cent combined. Farmers need at least average temperatures and minimal precipitation to complete combining this fall. Wind and frost caused the majority of the crop damage during the past week. Migrating water fowl also continued to damage crops. The snow and rain received last week stalled harvest in all areas and added to quality concerns. Overall crop quality is expected to be below average. Those who have finished harvest have begun fall work, including straw baling, hauling bales, fertilizer application and harrowing. -30- For More Information, Contact:
