NORTHERN SASKATCHEWAN STUDENTS BUILD AFFORDABLE HOMES FOR FAMILIES

Three families in La Loche, La Ronge and Pinehouse Lake have a place to call their own, thanks to high school students in these communities who, along with other partners, constructed the homes to help meet the need for affordable housing in northern Saskatchewan. Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer was in La Loche today to celebrate the completion of the three projects. Harpauer also announced approval for three new projects in these communities during the 2010-11 school semester, as well as an additional new project at the high school in Beauval.

"The leadership, community spirit and sheer hard work that these young people have demonstrated is truly inspiring," Harpauer said. "Our government is proud of each and every one of them for stepping forward to help improve the lives of families in need of safe, quality, affordable housing. We are also pleased to continue the success of this program by committing to additional student projects in northern Saskatchewan."

"The Northern Lights School Division would like to thank all the partners who made it possible for our students to participate in these affordable housing projects," Northern Lights School Division Chair Larry Ahenakew said. "The students have gained valuable experience in housing construction, which may encourage them to seek further education and employment in the construction field and its many trades."

As part of their school curriculum, the students participated in the construction of the homes to industry standards from the framing stage to various parts of finishing work. The students gained valuable experience in the home construction industry and met a need for affordable housing in their respective communities.

Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) worked with the Northern Lights School Division and its member schools including Churchill Community High School in La Ronge, Minahik Waskahigan School in Pinehouse Lake, La Loche Dene Community School in La Loche and other community partners to undertake the projects. SHC supplied the construction materials, arranged for required trade contractors and inspected each phase of construction.
