NEW WEST NILE CASES

There are 28 new probable and confirmed cases of clinical illness due to West Nile Virus in Saskatchewan, bringing the total number of cases to 97. Another 33 are currently under investigation.

The area experiencing the highest rate of infection continues to be the Five Hills Health Region. Of the 97 probable and confirmed cases in Saskatchewan, 47 are from Five Hills. The Five Hills Health Region includes the city of Moose Jaw, and runs north of Craik to south of Rockglen, east of Gravelbourg to west of Rouleau.

The other new cases are from the Saskatoon Regional Health Authority. The majority still tend to be mild or moderate West Nile fever.

Although mosquito numbers are decreasing the risk of West Nile Virus disease will continue for the next few weeks depending on the weather. It is therefore important that personal protective measures are used whenever mosquitoes are present.

The chart provided below illustrates the latest number of cases in the province.
