HOUSING COMPLEX OPENS IN ILE A LA CROSSE

A two-unit rental housing development for low-income singles and small families officially opened today in the northern Village of Ile a la Crosse, thanks to provincial funding totalling $62,160.

"Through our government's HomeFirst strategy, the creation of more safe, quality and affordable housing is one the ways we are building a better future for the people of Saskatchewan," Community Resources Minister Kevin Yates said. "Projects like this one in Ile a la Crosse are an excellent example of what can be achieved when we work together to help vulnerable people live in dignity and ultimately improve their lives."

"The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to ensuring that the people of northern Saskatchewan have access to quality, affordable housing," Highways and Transportation Minister Buckley Belanger said. "This project will help meet the growing need for stable and affordable housing for singles and small families in the northern Village of Ile a la Crosse."

The project involved the conversion of a single detached unit into a duplex consisting of 1 two-bedroom and 1 one-bedroom unit. The development will be managed by the Ile a la Crosse Housing Authority, which already manages 165 units in the community.

The two units, in conjunction with eight relocation/conversion units developed in the past three years, brings a total of ten new units for singles and small families in Ile a la Crosse.

The funding was provided through the province's HomeFirst housing strategy, which was established in 2004, to help low and moderate-income Saskatchewan citizens acquire safe homes that promote health, independence, security and dignity and that enhance the social and economic well-being of communities.
