INNOVATIVE PROJECT USES WASTE HEAT TO GENERATE CLEAN POWER IN SASKATCHEWAN

SaskPower and NRGreen Power, a sister company to Alliance Pipeline, today announced the completion of an innovative heat recovery project in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan.

The project involves the capture of exhaust heat from Alliance Pipeline’s natural gas compressor station in Kerrobert.  Using patented technology the waste heat is converted into electricity, which is then fed into the province’s electrical grid.

“By adding electricity to the provincial grid in such an environmentally friendly manner, this project is an ideal example of how this government is delivering on its promise to build a green and prosperous economy,” Premier Lorne Calvert said.  “Through our Crown corporation, we are working with other companies to grow environmentally low-impact power options which will help make life better for Saskatchewan families and help to build a better future here for our young people.”

“We are pleased to participate with SaskPower in this project,” Alliance Pipeline president and chief executive officer Murray Birch said.  “Recovering heat that would otherwise be vented into the atmosphere provides an opportunity for SaskPower and Alliance Pipeline to demonstrate our shared goals of environmental responsibility.”

This is the first of four waste heat units being built on Alliance’s natural gas pipeline in Saskatchewan, as part of SaskPower’s Environmentally Preferred Power (EPP) program.

“Our EPP program was designed to provide an opportunity for SaskPower to partner with the private sector to build and operate small-scale generation projects,” SaskPower president and CEO Pat Youzwa said.  “These projects will help us provide for new load-growth with environmentally low-impact options as we work to determine our next source of baseload power supply later this year.”

The project at the Kerrobert compressor station will produce about 5 megawatts of environmentally responsible electricity – enough to power about 5,000 homes.

Other waste heat recovery projects are being built on Alliance Pipeline’s natural gas pipeline system in Saskatchewan at Estlin, Loreburn and Alameda.

SaskPower is the principal supplier of electricity in Saskatchewan, serving more than 441,000 customers.  The Corporation operates with a total available capacity of approximately 3,655 megawatts, supplying customers through more than 154,000 kilometres of transmission and distribution lines.  The focus of recent additions to our system is on environmentally responsible and sustainable energy sources.

Alliance Pipeline Limited Partnership (Alliance Canada) owns the Canadian portion of the Alliance Pipeline system.  Alliance Canada is owned 50 per cent each by affiliates of Enbridge Income Fund (TSX:ENF.UN) and Fort Chicago Energy Partners LP (TSX:FCE.UN).
 
Alliance Pipeline L.P. (Alliance U.S.A.) owns the U.S. portion of the Alliance Pipeline system.  Alliance U.S.A. is owned 50 per cent each by affiliates of Enbridge Inc. (TSX:ENB)(NYSE:ENB and Fort Chicago Energy Partners LP (TSX:FCE.UN).
