SASKATCHEWAN’S ECONOMY LEADING THE NATION

Saskatchewan ranks either first or second in nine out of 10 key economic indicators, according to the latest economic checklist released today.

The checklist indicates Saskatchewan ranks number one in the country for percentage growth in a number of areas:

• Average Economic GDP Growth for 2008;
• Wholesale trade;
• Retail sales; and
• Residential building permits.

The province ranked second for:

• Population growth;
• Average weekly earnings;
• lowest unemployment rate;
• New vehicle sales; and
• Overall building permits.

"There probably has never been a time in our history when we can make the claim that Saskatchewan is at the top or close to it in so many areas of our economy," Enterprise and Innovation Minister Lyle Stewart said. "A strong, vibrant economy is good for everyone because it brings more opportunities, higher wages and a better quality of life for Saskatchewan people."

Stewart said the government is looking at ways to make sure the economic climate can be sustained, and the momentum for growth continued in the short and long-term.

"Our government is working hard to address the challenges of economic growth and to make sure all Saskatchewan people share in the benefits of growth," Stewart said.

The economic checklist can be found on the Enterprise and Innovation website at www.ei.gov.sk.ca.
