News Release - May 4, 2004 SAFER COMMUNITIES LEGISLATION INTRODUCED
Legislation introduced today will help to promote safe, healthy communities in Saskatchewan.
The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act will improve community safety by targeting and, if necessary, shutting down residential and commercial buildings that are used for illegal activities such as producing, selling or using illegal drugs, prostitution, solvent abuse, or the unlawful sale and consumption of alcohol. "Keeping communities safe is a top priority of this government. This new Bill will significantly assist our law enforcement officers in fighting organized crime and the illegal activities associated with it," Justice Minister Frank Quennell said. "This legislation will also empower residents to take back their neighbourhoods by anonymously reporting problem residences and businesses." The Bill provides additional powers for police and justice agencies and establishes a new office of the Director of Community Operations in the Department of Justice that will investigate complaints from the public. The Director will investigate complaints and take steps to address the matter, which could include obtaining a court order to temporarily or permanently shut down the property. "This legislation will put much-needed tools in place to increase the safety and well-being of neighbourhoods and communities giving leaders, concerned citizens and officials the means for constructive change," Regina Police Chief Cal Johnston said. The Bill also creates a process where fortifications that cause public safety concerns could be removed by police. These fortifications often include bulletproof glass or explosive resistant materials, armour to reinforce doors, and bars on windows or doors. -30- For More Information, Contact:
