PROVINCE HELPS REGINA HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD FIVE HOUSES FOR FAMILIES IN NEED

Five Habitat for Humanity partner families will achieve their dream of home ownership after receiving keys to their new homes at a presentation to be held in Regina on March 13. The five affordable housing projects were undertaken by the Regina affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, with $219,500 in funding assistance from the province to offset construction costs.

The funding is part of the $1 million investment announced on March 30, 2009 to assist Habitat for Humanity's Saskatchewan affiliates in providing 20 homes for lower-income Saskatchewan families in housing need. Of the 20 homes announced, the Government of Saskatchewan and Habitat for Humanity have in one year completed 13 homes in communities around the province.

"Our government is pleased to support Habitat for Humanity's outstanding efforts to provide affordable homeownership opportunities for Saskatchewan families in need," Regina Qu'Appelle Valley MLA Laura Ross said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer. "The lives of five deserving families have been changed for the better, and we commend everyone's efforts to make these safe, stable and affordable homes a reality."

"We are enormously gratified that we are able to make the dream of homeownership a reality for five Regina families," Habitat for Humanity Regina Inc. CEO Dennis Coutts said. "We are delivering homeownership opportunities more consistently than ever and in greater numbers. We could not accomplish this without the support of the province and our community partners. Together, we are making a difference."

The single family homes are located at 1258 Argyle Street, 1002 Rae Street, 1415 Athol Street, 1369 Rae Street and 1040 Robinson Street in Regina. Each family contributed 500 partnering hours in building their homes and other Habitat for Humanity homes.
