STATE FUNERAL TO BE HELD FOR FORMER CHIEF JUSTICE

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall announced plans today for a state funeral for The Honourable Edward D. Bayda, S.O.M., LL.D. Q.C., former Chief Justice of Saskatchewan.

"I want to express our sincere condolences to the family of former Chief Justice Bayda," Wall said. "He will long be remembered for his distinguished and influential judicial career, including the role he played in ensuring our free and democratic society as enshrined in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. A state funeral will be held so that we may honour and commemorate his contributions and service to the people of our province and our country."

The funeral will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, 2049 Scarth Street, Regina. Members of the public are invited to attend. Flags at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building and all provincial government buildings will fly at half-mast until sunset on the day of the funeral.

A book of condolence for his family has been placed at the main entrance of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building in Regina for signing by members of the public. The book will remain until the funeral and can be signed between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. People unable to sign the book in person can send their message of condolence at condolence@gov.sk.ca.
