SEPTEMBER MERCHANDISE EXPORTS UP SIGNIFICANTLY

Saskatchewan's merchandise exports rose by 39.2 per cent in September 2011 to a total of $2.69 billion, marking the third highest percentage year-over-year increase among the provinces.

"Exports are an important part of Saskatchewan's economy and this growth is further proof that Saskatchewan's strong economic performance is continuing," Enterprise Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "Saskatchewan has many of the products that are in demand in the global marketplace, and our exporters are working hard to show that Saskatchewan can help fulfill many of the needs facing the globe."

Agricultural products were up by 43.5 per cent to $870.2 million, followed by energy products up by 23.4 per cent to $921 million. Another significant increase included a rise in industrial goods by 63.0 per cent to $804 million.

"There are a variety of goods shipped out of Saskatchewan everyday that help feed and fuel the world," Harrison said. "This provides opportunities for Saskatchewan people in terms of jobs and investment that will continue to keep our economy a leader in our nation."
