PROVINCE CELEBRATES WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS

May 8th to 14th is Women Entrepreneurs Week in Saskatchewan, a time when we recognize the significant contributions of business and professional women to the province's economy.

Women entrepreneurs are a force in the province's business community, owning and operating approximately one-third of Saskatchewan businesses in 2005.

"Saskatchewan's surging economy has been driven in large measure by the commitment of innovative and hard-working women entrepreneurs," Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline said. "Women Entrepreneurs Week salutes their contributions and the valuable programming which Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan provides."

Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan Inc. has more than 800 members in the province. Last year it responded to over 2,300 inquiries, and recorded 69,000 visits to its website. As a non-profit organization, it has provided more than $12.2 million in loans to help women start, expand or purchase existing businesses in the province, and has leveraged an additional $9.3 million in funding. The financing has helped businesswomen create more than 640 full-time jobs in the province and also provides business advice, mentoring and training opportunities.

"The role of women has changed radically in just a few decades," Minister responsible for the Status of Women Joan Beatty said. "Now, more than ever, we are professional role models for others. Women Entrepreneurs Week allows us to celebrate the commitment, mentorship and personal achievements that make that possible."

Highlight of the week is Women Entrepreneurs' business symposium and annual general meeting May 12th in Regina featuring national business journalist and commentator Deirdre McMurdy.
