HEALTH SCIENCE LIAISON APPOINTED

The province has established a new liaison position in conjunction with the University of Saskatchewan to help co-ordinate Government and the University in planning and implementing the College of Medicine accreditation plan and advancing the Academic Health Science Project. The term position will be re-evaluated after six months, and will initially be filled by Dr. Jim Melenchuk who will also be involved in assessing the impact of the accreditation plan on the Academic Health Sciences Project.

"The liaison will advise government on how best to support the university's Academic Health Sciences Project and the College of Medicine accreditation," Learning Minister Andrew Thomson said. "The University of Saskatchewan and the College of Medicine serve important roles in the continuing economic and social well-being of the province. Dr. Melenchuk's appointment to the position recognizes his unique combination of skills and experience."

The liaison reports to the Deputy Minister of Learning; providing advice and recommendations regarding the province's significant funding commitments of over $120 million for the University's Academic Health Science Project and the College of Medicine. The liaison will also work with the university's senior management.

"The Academic Health Sciences Project is intimately tied to our accreditation plan for the College of Medicine," University of Saskatchewan President Peter MacKinnon said. "Therefore, a dedicated liaison between the province and the University of Saskatchewan will help facilitate the transition to the innovative teaching, learning and research environment planned for the Academic Health Sciences Project. The university will take full advantage of this opportunity to expedite communications with the province and to finalize details and advance these projects."

Dr. Melenchuk graduated with distinction from the University of Saskatchewan's College of Medicine in 1980. He practiced medicine in Saskatoon for over 17 years, during which time he served on numerous boards and committees, including 12 years with the Saskatchewan Medical Association for which he served a term as president. Dr. Melenchuk was a member of the legislative assembly from 1999 to 2003 during which time he served as minister of Finance and Learning. Dr. Melenchuk also served as vice-chair of The Standing Committee on Healthcare from 2000-2003.
