SASKATCHEWAN PUBLIC SERVICE CELEBRATES NATIONAL ABORIGINAL DAY

The Saskatchewan public service is pleased to join in the celebrations of National Aboriginal Day on Saturday, June 21, and salutes the successes of its nearly 1,500 Aboriginal employees.

"Aboriginal employees bring a wealth of knowledge, experience and enthusiasm to their jobs," Minister responsible for the Public Service Commission Wayne Elhard said. "There are many great opportunities for Aboriginal people in the public service and with the help of a new, permanent position aimed at recruiting Aboriginal employees, we are confident the public service will become more attractive to Saskatchewan's Aboriginal people."

"My job allows me to go into the community and talk to Aboriginal people who might be a good fit in the public service," Aboriginal Recruiter for the Public Service Wavell Starr said. "It gives me a lot of satisfaction because I can see that I am making a difference - not just for the workplace, but also for Aboriginal people."

Starr says the public service encourages work/life balance, which allows him to continue with his creative pursuits, such as drumming, singing and wrestling. "I'm fortunate because the public service recognizes the importance of my personal life, and allows me to take advantage of work/life balance options to continue with these interests. Plus, the workplace is an open, friendly environment and one that I enjoy coming to every day."

Starr will be on-hand at the National Aboriginal Day celebrations in Regina on June 21. Other Aboriginal employees in the public service, including Acting Deputy Minister of the Ministry of First Nations and Métis Relations Ron Crowe, are available for profiles or interviews, and are listed below.
