NORTHERN STUDENTS VISIT REGINA TO LEARN ABOUT GOVERNMENT

A group of northern high school students are travelling to Regina this weekend to learn about Saskatchewan's provincial government and its history as part of the Saskatchewan Youth Mentorship Program.

"This program supports northern youth, giving them the opportunity to come to our province's capital city and get a firsthand look at how their government works and what the public service has to offer," Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Dustin Duncan said. "We hope that their time here will inspire them to consider a career path they might not have considered before."

Cameco Corporation has partnered with the Government of Saskatchewan and the Government House Foundation, to bring students from three northern high schools to Regina from May 9 to 12. The program aims to provide northern students with a look at what a career in government or the Saskatchewan public service has to offer as well as an opportunity to learn about the history of our province.

"Cameco takes a keen interest in helping to support the development of leadership skills among young people in Saskatchewan's north," Cameco's Manager of Community Investment Brian Main said. "Our support of the Youth Mentorship Program fits in with our larger focus of encouraging young people across the north to strive for high achievement in the classroom and also as leaders within their communities."

The students are from Rhoda Hardlotte Memorial Keethanow High School in Stanley Mission, Minahik Waskahigan School in Pinehouse Lake and Churchill Community High School in La Ronge.

The students will tour the University of Regina, Government House, the RCMP Depot Division and the Legislative Building where they will attend Question Period and Routine Proceedings. They will meet with the Lieutenant Governor, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Members of the Legislative Assembly and government officials to get an inside perspective of government and the legislative process.
