News Release - April 30, 2003 SPRING WILDFIRE HAZARD WARNING ISSUED
Saskatchewan Environment today issued a warning to residents across the forest and forest fringe portion of the province concerning spring burning conditions.
As of April 30th, 41 wildfires have occurred in this area, compared to 48 last year and the five-year average of 74 for today's date. To date, people have caused all of this year's fires. "After the snow melts and before the forest greens up is always a very dangerous time of year for wildfire and these early spring fires are generally caused by people trying to use fire for constructive purposes who underestimate the severity of the burning conditions," Environment Minister Buckley Belanger said. Free burning permits from Saskatchewan Environment are required for any outdoor burning project undertaken in or within 4.5 kilometres of a provincial forest from April 1st to October 31st. In addition to burning permits, information on safer burning practices and reducing the risk of wildfire to buildings is available at any Environment Forest Protection Area Office. Typical burning projects might include burning brush, stubble, grass or organic debris around homes or recreational cabins. Belanger urged anyone using fire for any purpose to use it with care through the summer. To report a wildfire, the public is encouraged to contact the nearest Saskatchewan Environment office or make use of the province's toll-free Firewatch number at 1-800-667-9660. -30- For More Information, Contact:
